SANTA MARIA DELLA SCALA annex

One of the first hospitals in all of Europe was the Santa Maria della Scala, founded in 1090. It was initially constructed to welcome pilgrims traveling along the Via Francigena and to help underprivileged and abandoned children.

Today, it has become a great museum, with historical relics, impressive frescoes and elements of Catholicism.

One of the main annexes of this hospital is located within ORIA land. This historical space which once took such great care of people has been respectfully transformed into our wine cellar to now take care of our wines.

VIA FRANCIGENA

During the 7th century when Rome was the center of the world, its main route ran from north to south through the center of Europe following the medieval pilgrimage itinerary. The route emerged between the 7th and 8th centuries with the purpose of connecting the Lombard capital, Pavia, with the lands near Rome.

Pilgrims coming from northern Europe transited this route, stopping at places such as Bagno Vignoli.

Here in our annex of the hospital of Santa Maria della Scala is precisely where the pilgrims made their stops.
