Santa Maria
della Scala
A 13th-century monastery that will be transformed into 14 suites in the most authentic Tuscan style, in the heart of Val d'Orcia. The base from which to experience Tuscany —and to return.
Discover the monastery
Eight centuries of history.
An exceptional future.
The Santa Maria della Scala monastery was built in the 13th century in San Quirico d'Orcia, in the heart of the territory that today carries the UNESCO World Heritage designation. Its stone walls have survived eight centuries of Tuscan history.
Oria is carrying out a meticulous restoration that respects every original element of the building while incorporating all the comforts of a contemporary luxury hotel. The project works in coordination with UNESCO and the Italian heritage authorities.
The 14 suites will occupy the original spaces of the monastic cells, the cloister and the former chapter house. Each room preserves the arches, vaults and original materials of the 13th century.
14 suites · 13th-century architecture
Each suite is unique. Each one has its own name, its own view, its own story.
The largest room in the house, with high ceilings of original beams, a private sitting area and an en-suite bathroom. Designed for a long stay, a honeymoon or a pause for two.
The monastery's former chapter house. A double bed beneath 13th-century vaults, a solid-wood wardrobe and a sofa for reading by the large window. Panoramic views over Val d'Orcia.
Two single beds, white walls and exposed beams. Designed for the children of the family, connected to the principal room so that the bond grows with every trip.
Private access to the medieval cloister garden. A terrace over the aromatic plants of the former monastic kitchen garden.
Built in the undercroft of the monastery. The natural temperature of the living stone creates a cave-like microclimate: deep silence, constant coolness and long dreams.
A west-facing room, with a large window over the vineyard and the cypresses. The Tuscan sunset is watched from the bed. One of the suites most requested by Oria members.
